Frequently Asked Questions.

Why do you include weddings as Personal documentary photography?
A wedding is the ultimate personal event that is best captured by a photojournalist. There has been a lot of talk about photographing weddings in the photojournalist style. For me, that style comes naturally because it is my profession. I cover a wedding completely, looking for the moments that make it a memory worth preserving, on your mantel, your wall and in a leather bound book. I consider it a privilege to capture the intimacy and beauty of one of the most joyful moments or your life. I love telling stories. Your love, your wedding day is a story as worthy as any I've ever told. I like that I'm going to capture the magical spirit that is unique to each wedding. It's as if each one is an opportunity for me to shine.

What is your approach to shooting our day and how do you make connections with people?
We'll meet before your wedding and you'll see I am very laid back. It is easy for me to connect with people because I've done it all over the world in every situation imaginable. I put people at ease. I have been readily accepted in every setting, from King's courts to taverns the world over. I enjoy people and the people seem to enjoy being photographed. It is a mutually respectful situation. My approach is not heavy handed and directive, but discreet and discerning. I work in closely with my subjects to yield "real" moments on one of the most important days of your life. I use 35 mm cameras to capture the spirit and the intimate story unfolding in front of me. I am low key, but I am everywhere I need to be to document your day. Often couples ask to me to photograph their entire wedding weekend, and I have packages that include comprehensive coverage.

If you only shoot candid moments does that mean no group shots or posed pictures at all, such as family group shots or formal portraits?
No, but we're striving for something here that reaches far beyond your parent's formal wedding album. We're going to work together to achieve a book of your wedding that is the sum of all its parts. The fashion. The style. The coming together of family and friends from far off places. A small part of the coverage of your day will be the historic moments shot in arranged group shots of your family at this point in their history with you at the center of the frame. We'll do family and wedding party group shots because they too document the day and who was there and how they look, but it is a small part of the day. I'd like to limit group shots either just before the wedding or between the wedding and the reception to 15-30 minutes. This does not include the informal portrait of the bride and the groom I will take separate from everyone at some point during the day. We walk away together, and it is the first time you have a moment to realize you are a couple. Capturing that passion you have for each other at that point in your lives is as precious as every candid moment I'll capture throughout the day. Some of the most amazing and intimate scenes I've every captured are of couples looking into each other's eyes either minutes before they go through the ceremony, or shortly thereafter. It is what the day is all about: The beginning of your personal history together.

How many weddings do you take on and how many images do you take in the average wedding?
Today, there is no average wedding. Your wedding is a historical family document that should be preserved in as many mediums as possible. I take each wedding very seriously and am selective in the number I take on each year and who I shoot for each month. I never do more than one wedding a day because my focus and my investment in you must be as complete as your investment in me. It takes the whole day, usually up to eight hours to get the real moments I'm after. I am there for the day shooting between 1,000 and 2,000 images during the day. That will be edited to about 600 viewable images. I will archive those images and preserve copies in duplicate form for up to five years, in case you decide you want more photographs. A CD or DVD is provided to the couple as part of my coverage. In addition, images will be provided on a secure website for private viewing. After the couple has made their selections, they will also be able to make the site available to family and friends via a password. These are just a few of the mediums available to view, share, and enjoy your images.

Brad, you talked about being selective about whose wedding you will shoot. What do you require to sign on to be our wedding photographer?
I am the photographer for you if you truly want a photojournalist's style with an artist's eye for quality. I shoot 90% of my work with available light, and my photographs are high quality imagery. I need light to shoot your event. Night time weddings, while I would accept them will not yield the best photography because flash must be used. If you are having a beach wedding, an island wedding, a vacation get away wedding, a unique venue, or having your ceremony in a church I'm your man. I travel very easily.

Brad, we're interested in having you document our wedding, but what kind of coverage do you provide and what is your price range? Also, how do we contact you to set up a meeting?
My fees for wedding day coverage start at $4,000 for basic shooting of the event. But all weddings need to be tailored to the specific needs of the couple, which is why I offer many coverage options. My prices range from $4,000 to $15,000. Depending on the nature of the celebration and the investment the couple is willing to make, I can be and have been available for the whole weekend and in some instances have a second photographer added for further coverage. Click here to send me your information, and I will return to you, via email, my fee and coverage list, and from there we will set up a meeting. Except for my beginning price wedding, I provide the couple with a 50 picture leather bound album, the DVD and the website, as well as a bound proof book of the edited images. Once we agree on the date and the level of coverage, I reserve the date for your wedding which is guaranteed by a retainer of half my fee and our signed agreement. Please fill out the personal information form, and I'll get back to you soon. Thank you for your interest and I can't wait to meet you and record your day.
